Will you soon complete your orthodontic treatment? You have much to be excited about! Still, as you approach the finish line with braces, you might wonder what you can expect when they are being removed. And what will you have to do to maintain your results afterward? This blog post can serve as your guide to the road ahead.
Braces Removal Is Easy
Most patients are surprised by how easy the braces removal process is. The brackets are designed to easily pop off your teeth with the help of a special instrument. You might feel a little pressure as your braces are being removed, but overall, the experience should be fast and painless.
Once the braces are off, any remaining adhesive will be polished off of your teeth, and your dentist or orthodontist will perform a final examination. They may also take some photos and X-rays to document the conclusion of your treatment.
The First 48 Hours
It is common for patients to experience some mild discomfort during the first 48 hours after braces removal. You might find that your teeth and gums are extra sensitive, and there may be some slight swelling in your soft oral tissues. Be sure to be gentle when you are brushing and flossing, and you can rinse with warm salt water to reduce inflammation. If you experience any extreme pain, give your care provider a call.
Maintaining Your Results
Even after your braces are off, you will have a bit of work to do. You will receive a retainer. Its job is to prevent your teeth from drifting out of place. If you fail to wear it as instructed, you could accidentally undo the results of your treatment!
If you have a removable retainer, you might have to wear it full-time at first (20 – 22 hours each day). Gradually, as your teeth become more solidified in their new positions, you might be able to ease up on retainer wear. Eventually, you may need to wear it only at night. Some people can keep their teeth in place by using their retainer just a few times each week. If it ever starts to feel tight, that is a sign you are not wearing it enough.
Braces removal is something to be excited about! If you have any questions about the process in front of you, talk to your dental care team. They will be happy to assist you.
